Jessica Pegula v Coco Vandeweghe Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between the two players on the WTA Tour.

Vandeweghe, on a Resurgent Path

The last few seasons have been rough for the 30-year-old American Coco Vandeweghe. A serious ankle injury and the subsequent recovery from it kept the American out of action for the better part of 2019 and 2020.

Last year, she reached her first singles semifinal in over three years in Birmingham; on the back of that result, she once again entered the top 200 and is now currently ranked World No. 168.

So far in 2022, Vandeweghe has played only in three tournaments – two of which were the ITF events. In ITF Bendigo, she reached the semis while in ITF Rome, she succumbed in the opener to Caroline Dolehide. The former World No. 9 also played in the Australian Open but lost in the qualifiers.

Vandeweghe incurred a similar fate in Charleston too as she lost in the qualifying to Gabriela Lee. However, by the virtue of the lucky loser rule, she got a ticket to the main draw.

She has certainly made the most of this chance as she dismissed Anastasia Gasanova and Lauren Davis in three sets.

Pegula Tames Paolini

Number six seed Jessica Pegula didn’t need a lot of effort to win her opening match in Charleston; she comfortably defeated Jasmine Paolini 6-2, 6-1, to reach the third round here for the second time in her career.

However, the 28-year-old has never made it past this stage in the competition and it will be intriguing to see if she can finally break the jinx this season.

Currently ranked #13 – a career-best for her – Pegula arrived for the tournament with a fair bit of momentum. She recently reached the semifinal in the Miami Open and was also a quarterfinalist in the Australian Open.

At the same time, Pegula has seen her share of surprising defeats notably to the likes of Caroline Garcia and Irina-Camelia Begu.

While the American hasn’t got an exceptionally strong clay pedigree, she is certainly well-experienced to change that in Charleston.

Pegula v Vandeweghe Prediction and Tip

Pegula will start as the odds-on favourite. That said, Vandeweghe is a former top 10 player and a two-time Grand Slam semifinalist. Keeping her fitness issues aside, she can very well give Pegula a run for her money if she is in her element. A long match seems quite likely here.

Tip: Coco Vandeweghe to Win a Set: 7/4 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
