Hubert Hurkacz v Pedro Martinez Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 25-year old Pole, and the Spaniard, who is a year younger.

Miami Semi-Finalist Hurkacz

Hurkacz’s last tournament was Miami, where he was the defending champion.

And he made a decent fist of his defence, reaching the semi-final this time, and beating the top seed and world number two Daniil Medvedev, before losing to the eventual winner, the Spanish teenager Carlos Alcaraz.

The Pole is not renowned as a clay court player and he has never been further than the second round in Monte Carlo before. But he has at least emulated that feat, after easing past the world number 92, Hugo Dellien of Bolivia, on Monday.

Although Dellien had to save break points in the opening game, the first set went with serve until the eleventh game, when the Bolivian was broken to love. Hurkacz claimed the set next game.

When Dellien was broken at the start of the second set, the match seemed as good as over. Dellien had other ideas, though, and hit back with a break of his own, only to drop his serve once more.

Even than he was not finished. Serving for the match, Hurkacz had a match point saved, but then had to save three break points. However, when another match point came along, the Pole was able to make that one count.

Chile Winner Martinez

Martinez is already a winner on clay this year, having beaten Sebastian Baez of Argentina in the final of the Chie Open in Santiago in February. That was his second clay court final on the ATP tour on clay – he finished runner-up to Casper Ruud in Kitzbuhel last July.

Since Chile he had reached the second round in Indian Wells and the third round in Miami, but he travelled to Monte Carlo knowing he had never been beyond the first round here before.

However, he has now improved on that with a straight sets win over Ugo Humbert of France, the world number 48, on Tuesday.

The match began with both men dropping their serve, and then they did so again. But when Humbert dropped his serve for a third time, Martinez was able to take advantage and claim the first set.

The second set was a litany of missed chances for both men. Humbert went a break up, but was unable to hold on to the lead and two breaks gave Martinez the chance to serve for the match. He could not take it, though, and it went to a tie-break.

Martinez created three match points, Humber saved two of them, but not the third.

Hurkacz v Martinez Prediction and Tip

Whilst Martinez is the more recognised clay court player of the pair, Hurkacz will be hoping that the confidence he gained trying to defend his title in Miami, will help him get through this match.
