Alejandro Davidovich-Folina v David Goffin Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before on the grass of s’Hertogenbosch in 2019, Goffin winning easily in straight sets.

Davidovich-Fokina Shocks Djokovic

Having eased past the challenge of the American Marcos Giron in the first round who he beat in straight sets, Davidovich-Fokina was given little chance by most experts in his second round tie with the world number one and top seed, Novak Djokovic.’

However, he proved the doubters all wrong with the biggest win of his career.

Djokovic, playing his first match for more than a month, after being forced to miss both Indian Wells and Miami over his vaccination status, was sluggish in the first set, dropping two consecutive service games. He got one of the breaks back, but was then broken again, and the set belonged to the Spaniard.

The second set became increasingly scrappy. Djokovic went a break down but Davidovich-Fokina could not capitalise on it this time and the Serb levelled things up. They swapped breaks and, this time, it was Djokovic’s turn to go a break-up. He, too, failed to take advantage, and it finally went to a tie-break, which the Serb won.

But Djokovic undid all his hard work by allowing himself to be broken at the start of the third set, and then again.

To compound matters, serving to stay in the match, he was broken for a third time, and Davidovich-Fokina could celebrate a famous victory.

Marrakesh Winner Goffin

Goffin is feeling a lot better about life than he did 10 days ago.

The Belgian had endured a torrid past year, struggling for form and seemingly powerless to stop his world ranking plummeting.

But he arrested that trend by winning the tournament in Marrakesh, beating Alex Molcan of Slovakia in the final to record his first career title since Marseille last year, and his sixth in all.

And, given a wildcard in Monte Carlo, he has carried that form through to the Principality.

He began his campaign with a straightforward straight sets defeat of the Czech qualifier Jiri Lehecka, to earn himself a second round tie with Dan Evans of Great Britain, a man who usually struggles on clay.

To Evans’ credit he stayed with Goffin in the first set, saving five break points and even creating one of his own. But Goffin proved the stronger player in the subsequent tie-break and took the set, and, after the pair swapped breaks at the start of the second set, took a firm grip on proceedings with a further break.

Another break underlined his dominance and he was able to serve out from there.

Davidovich-Fokina v Goffin Prediction and Tip

Both men will go into this match confident for different reasons: Davidovich-Fokina because he has just beaten Djokovic, and Goffin because he has discovered what it is like to win again.

That should make for a close match, but Goffin might just edge it, based on the evidence of their one previous match, although that was on grass.

Tip: Goffin to win: 5/6 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
