Anett Kontaveit v Angelique Kerber Head to Head
There have been five previous matches played between Kontaveit and Kerber with the world number six leading 4-1. On clay they have played twice, in 2017 and 2018 and Kontaveit was a winner both times.

Following on from the four titles that Kontaveit won last season, she has already clinched the St. Petersburg Open this season and made it to the final in Doha following that.
However, in what were two shock results following that, the world number six fell to third and second round losses in Indian Wells and Miami respectively. And after that, Kontaveit hasn’t played any more tennis.
A switch to clay would be an interesting proposition too given Kontaveit’s previous record on this surface.
Last season, for instance, Kontaveit featured in only three tournaments on the red dirt and her third round appearance in Roland Garros was her best showing. This, for a player, who clinched four WTA competitions through the season.
Can she shake off those issues on this surface and make a solid start against a very challenging opponent?

Forgettable Start for Kerber
She might have shown signs of returning to some of her best tennis last season but Kerber has had a struggle this year.
Starting off with back to back defeats at Australian Open and WTA Doha, Kerber did show a brief spark in Indian Wells by reaching the fourth round but things have pretty much been downhill after that.
A third round loss to Iga Swiatek from being a set up at that tournament and an opening drubbing at the hands of Naomi Osaka followed in Miami.
And at the Billie Jean Cup last week, Kerber was sent packing in both the matches she played – losing to Yulia Putintseva and Elena Rybakina.
Can Kerber now overcome her issues and adjust to the clay courts of Stuttgart as she faces the world number six? She would do good to remember she has won a title in Stuttgart but that came six years ago.
Kontaveit v Kerber Prediction and Tip
Kontaveit’s form might have dropped and she might not be the best on clay but against a struggling Kerber she sure starts off a favourite.
