Anna Karolina Schmiedlova v Lesia Tsurenko Head to Head

Schmiedlova has a 3-1 lead over Tsurenko, but the latter won their only tour-level meeting in Moscow in 2015. Three of their four meetings have needed a third set and one of them ended with Schmiedlova winning 7-6, 7-6.

Schmiedlova Struggling to Win Matches

Schmiedlova doesn’t have an encouraging record this season, but she has a very solid record on clay and that should aid her in Istanbul.

The Slovakian has won two of her three titles on clay and also finished runner-up on the surface once in 2015. Last year, she also picked a WTA 125K title on the surface, winning in Belgrade by beating Arantxa Rus in the final.

This year, the World no. 87 has struggled on the tour. She has won just two main draw matches and both of them came in Guadalajara, where she reached the quarterfinals, before falling to China’s Qiang Wang.

Schmiedlova has featured in five other tour-level events, making first round exits in all, with the most recent upset coming against 537th-ranked Yuliana Lizarazo of Colombia at the Bogota Open.

She did win a couple of matches before that tournament in a WTA 125 event in Marbella, but overall her form remains a cause of concern and she will look to get some momentum in the first round in Istanbul.

Tsurenko Does Well in Qualifiers

Facing Schmiedlova is qualifier Lesia Tsurenko, who made it to the main draw with a tough three-set win over Australia’s Jaimee Fourlis.

After an almost three-hour battle, Tsurenko beat the Aussie 6-2, 3-6, 7-5. She had 19 break points in the match and converted six of them. Her opponent had 10 break point chances and she could take just four of them.

The Ukrainian had earlier beaten the United States’ Caty McNally 6-3, 6-2 in the first qualifying round.

The 32-year-old will be featuring in the main draw of a tour-level event for the fourth time this season, she is 0-3 so far. Overall, she is 6-7 for the season.

A four-time champion on the tour, Tsurenko is a former champion in Istanbul, winning the title in 2015 by beating Urszula Radwanska in the final.

Schmiedlova v Tsurenko Prediction and Tip

Schmiedlova’s recent form has been concerning, while Tsurenko has just won two qualifying rounds. Expect this to be another tight affair, with the Slovak edging past the Ukrainian.
