Djokovic’s Coming off Shock Monte Carlo Result

At the end of the previous season, if someone said Djokovic would be stuck at a win-loss record of 2-2 more than halfway through April 2022 without any injury issues, the person would have been scoffed at. Even derided.

But here we are and Djokovic has the kind of a start to the season which he might not have expected either.

A combination of issues around his stance around vaccination and rustiness because of the lack of tennis have meant Djokovic is still stuck on 20 Grand Slam titles and has won just two matches to his two defeats.

Djokovic, who opened his season on the hard court surfaces of Dubai in February, went down to Jiri Vesely in the quarterfinals of that competition.

And if that wasn’t enough, the start to the clay court season went shockingly awry as he fell in three sets against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the second round of the Monte-Carlo Masters.

After getting the first round bye there, Djokovic started off slowly against Fokina but looked to have turned things around when he came back from a break down to win the second set. Unfortunately for the world number one, he failed to keep up the pace and lost 6-1 in the third.

Can he now get himself into some sort of a rhythm heading into this encounter?

Djere Coming into His Own?

After having reached the quarterfinal at Adelaide, in what was his first tournament of the season, Djere suffered five successive defeats spread across as many tournaments. Four of which came in the opening rounds and two of them on clay.

A second round loss in Indian Wells and a first round defeat in Miami did nothing to stem the tide but since the re-shift to clay, Djere has been a happier chap.

He won three matches in a row to make the semifinals in Marrakesh and reached the third round in Monte-Carlo. And earlier in this competition at home, Djere overcame Hamad Mejdedovic in straight sets to set up this meeting with Djokovic.

While Djere has fallen to 50th in the world and doesn’t quite belong to the same pedigree as Djokovic, he sure will know his opponent isn’t at his best.

Can Djere take advantage of that knowledge?

Djokovic v Djere Prediction and Tip

A straight-set win could have been an expected result for Djokovic but it might not be that simple this time around given the rustiness associated with Djokovic. Expected Djere to steal a set.

Tip: Djokovic to win in straight sets: 3/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
