Khachanov Hoping to Stall Losing Streak

Khachanov seemed to have been off to a good start to the season when he reached the final at Adelaide International where he lost to Gael Monfils.

A third round at Australian Open was slightly underwhelming but he followed that up with a solid showing in Doha where the Russian reached the semifinal.

Since then, however, things have fallen apart for Khachanov, who had once been ranked eighth in the world. A second round loss at the hands of Novak Djokovic in Dubai looked to be par for the course but that was followed by three losses in a row.

He lost his opener to Jenson Brooksby in Indian Wells, went down to Tommy Paul at Miami and then lost another first round match against Diego Schwartzman in Monte-Carlo.

Khachanov will now hope to put all of that behind him as he looks to make a fresh start on a surface which isn’t quite his favourite. But a positive couple of results here could go a long way in helping him better his 5-6 win loss record on red dirt from the previous season.

Safiullin Makes Short Work of Ymer

After a difficult couple of qualifying rounds to get to the main draw, Safiullin was a straight-set winner over Mikael Ymer in the first round here in Belgrade.

Safiullin, who was 11/10 odds to overcome his Swedish opponent, registered a 7-5, 6-0 victory in a match lasting an hour and 38 minutes to seal his place besides Khachanov.

At one stage it looked like it was all going Ymer’s way when he broke Safiullin and raced away to a 5-2 lead in the opening set. But as things unravelled, that was the last time the Swede would win a game; Safiullin raced off to win the next 11 games in a row to complete the opening round win.

There were five successive breaks of serves that went Safiullin’s way in what was his first ATP tournament since February 19 earlier this year.

Can he continue his solid run though?

Khachanov v Safiullin Prediction and Tip

While Khachanov’s form has been terrible, he could still prove to be a handful here but the big question is if Safiullin can test his opponent. We think so. Expecting a three-setter in fact.

Tip: Khachanov to win in three sets: 3/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
