Holger Rune v Taro Daniel Head to Head

They met once at a Challenger event on clay last year, with Rune winning in straight sets.

Rune Upsets Garin

Eighteen-year-old Holger Rune shocked fifth seed and World no. 31 Cristian Garin in the first round in Belgrade on Monday.

The win comes close on the heels of his win over World no 30 Aslan Karatsev in the first round in Monte-Carlo. The Danish teenager, who had qualified for the main draw in Monte Carlo, lost in the second round to Casper Ruud, but has been in good form recently. He won the title in Sanremo, Italy this month for his fifth Challenger Tour title. Four of those five titles have come on clay.

The win over Garin was just his fourth at the tour level this season.

Rune had 17 break points in the match and he converted six of them (thrice in each set) to beat the Chilean 6-3, 6-1. While the first set was a tough one with Garin also breaking twice, it was all one-way traffic in the second set with rune outplaying the senior pro.

Rune had also defeated World no. 42 Ugo Humbert at Indian Wells earlier this year.

A good player on clay courts, Rune reached his first two ATP quarterfinals last year in Santiago and Metz respectively. Having broken into the top 100 this year, he has constantly been on the rise and now the World No. 72 will be looking to make his third tour-level quarterfinal with a win on Thursday.

Daniel Rebounds to Beat Lajovic

Qualifier Taro Daniel fought back from a set down to beat local favourite Dusan Lajovic in the first round on Tuesday.

The Japanese player, who had qualified for the main draw with straight sets wins over Aleksandr Nedovyesov and Liam Broady, couldn’t get going in the first set against Lajovic as he was broken twice by the Serb in the 34-minute first set. Tables turned in the second set with the 104th-ranked Daniel outplaying the World no. 78 and forcing the decider.

It was a highly competitive third set with both players breaking each other twice before Daniel raced to victory in the deciding set tiebreak. The Japanese won the match 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-2)in two hours and 50 minutes.

With the win, the 29-year-old improved his season record to 7-7. A run to the third round of the Australian Open was the highlight of his season, as he knocked out Andy Murray in the second round after qualifying for the main draw.

Overall, Daniel is 31-40 on clay over his career and his only ATP title came on the surface in Istanbul in 2018. He had qualified as lucky loser in the tournament last year and he went on to reach the semifinals before falling to Matteo Berrettini. Can he reach another quarterfinal in Serbia?

Rune v Daniel Prediction and Tip

This is expected to be a close contest. Rune’s in a touch better form and has beaten a couple of big players recently. Expect the Dane to end Daniel’s run on Thursday.
