Dominic Thiem and Fabio Fognini are among the top players, along with Diego Schwartzman who will feature in the maiden edition of ATP Cordoba.
World No. 8 Thiem had a pretty superb season in 2018 and he will be looking to build upon that momentum over the coming months. He has got a tight schedule in January, with appearances in Mubadala and a couple of other preparatory tournaments.
Given that the competition in Cordoba will start right after the Australian Open, he will be keen on building some rhythm before shifting to clay. In the previous season, he won three singles titles, one of which was the Argentina Open. He was also the runner-up at the French Open and the Madrid Masters.
Placed in his opposite half will be the Italian No. 1 Fabio Fognini. He finished the 2018 season as the World No. 13 on the back of three titles. He won the Brasil Open earlier this year and was also a semifinalist at the Rio Open. Needless to mention, Fognini is quite good at playing on the South American circuit and he will be the player to look out for in Cordoba.
The tournament organisers have also confirmed the participation of the 26-year-old Diego Schwartzman. The Argentinean had a breakthrough spell in 2018 that pushed him to his best singles ranking at the 11th position. However, he couldn’t hold on to that rank and eventually ended the season as the World No. 17.
Schwartzman won the Rio Open and subsequently reached the quarterfinal at the Roland Garros. Thereafter, his form took a small hit as he couldn’t get past the early rounds in most of the tournaments that followed.
The 2019 ATP Cordoba Open will be played the week before the Argentina Open. The fans in the country are in for a massive treat as they will get to see some world class players in action.
The competition will be played from February 4 to February 9, 2019, as a part of the ATP World Tour 250 Series. It replaced the famed Ecuador Open, which had to be discontinued owing to a lack of financial support.
