Carreno Busta Dispatches Zapata Miralles
Pablo Carreno Busta is one way from his first quarterfinal appearance of the season in an individual event. He did play a pivotal role in taking Spain to the final of the ATP Cup, but ever since then he has fallen in the Round of 16 four times this year.
The four tournaments include the Australian Open, Rio Open, Acapulco Open and the Monte Carlo Masters. Will it be fifth time lucky for the Spaniard? He reached the Round of 16 in Barcelona on Wednesday with a straight sets win over compatriot Bernabe Zapata Miralles.
Carreno Busta saved half of the six break points that he faced and converted half of the 12 that he faced to win the second round contest 6-3, 6-3 in an hour and 28 minutes.
The Spaniard, ranked no. 19th in the world, improved to 12-7 for the season and to 3-2 on clay in 2022.
The Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist had reached the semifinals in Barcelona for the second time last season, but was once again denied a place in the final. Last year it was Rafael Nadal who ended his run. Can he make it to the quarterfinals again this season?

Sonego Eases Past Ymer
World No. 28 Lorenzo Sonego also had a good start to the tournament, easing past Sweden’s Elias Ymer in just an hour and 18 minutes on Tuesday.
The Italian, who won the Cagliari Open title on clay last year, improved his season record on the surface to 6-4. He was a semifinalist in Buenos Aires and a quarterfinalist in Cordoba, showing his class on the surface. He also won his opening match in Monte Carlo but was beaten in the next round by Laslo Djere.
Making his debut in Barcelona, the 26-year-old Italian saved all four break points that he faced and converted three of six breaking opportunities to win the match 6-4, 6-2. The win improved his season record to 10-10, with most of the defeats coming on hard courts, on which he reached just one quarterfinal in Sydney.
On Thursday, Sonego will be aiming to reach the quarterfinals for the fourth time this year.
Carreno Busta v Sonego Prediction and Tip
