Cirstea Rallies Past Rus

Defending champion and second seed Sorana Cirstea extended her winning streak in Istanbul to seven matches as she entered the last eight of the tournament with a come-from-behind victory over the Netherlands’ Arantxa Rus.

Cirstea, who broke a 13-year title drought by winning in Istanbul last year, also reached the final in Strasbourg last season, falling in the final of the clay court tournament.

On Wednesday, Cirstea lost the first set after being broken by Rus in the sixth game. She also lost serve in the very first game of the second set but then went on to win six games in a row to take the second set.

Both players raised their level in the third. They traded two breaks each in the first eight games. Then trailing 4-5, the Romanian had to save two match points on her serve to draw level at 5-5 and keep her chances alive.

She broke for a third time in the set in the next game and then held serve to carve out a remarkable 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 victory in two hours and 32 minutes.

The win followed a tough first round win against Kamilla Rakhimova in the first round. Cirstea was broken four times in the match, while she broke her opponent seven times before scoring a 6-4, 6-1 victory.

With the win, Cirstea improved to 13-8 in 2022. This will be a second quarterfinal appearance for the World no. 24, following her semifinal finish in Lyon.

Grabher Into Her First WTA QF

Qualifier Julia Grabher continued her winning run in the tournament, upsetting the fifth seed Jil Teichmann in the Round of 16 on Wednesday and reaching her first ever WTA quarterfinal.

Grabher, who has an 8-11 record in finals at the ITF level, had made it to the main draw with straight sets wins over Anastasia Tikhonova and Kamilla Rakhimova in the qualifiers.

She then won her first round match against Pemra Özgen, beating the Turkish player 7-5, 6-2. On Wednesday, she won a fourth consecutive match without dropping a set as she stunned Teichman 6-4, 6-4.

She saved five of six break points and converted three of five to down the Swiss player, ranked no. 37 in the world. It was the second top 50 win of her career, following her recent win over Slovenia’s Tamara Zidansek at the Billie Jean King Cup.

Ranked no. 194 in the world, Grabher now aims for a first semifinal spot on the tour.

Cirstea v Grabher Prediction and Tip

Cirstea will be a heavy favourite to win this one. Grabher has shown that she can compete at this level, but will have her task cut out in the quarterfinals. Cirstea should win in straight sets.
