World No. 47 Sara Sorribes Tormo stormed into the quarterfinals with a crushing win over Varvara Gracheva in the second round of the Istanbul Cup.
The Spaniard, who was also dominant in her first round win over China’s Wang Qiang on Wednesday, needed an hour and 23 minutes to beat the World no. 73, 6-2, 6-1 on Thursday.
Sorribes Tormo, who was broken in the very first game of the match, came back strongly, breaking her opponent thrice to take the first set. She was broken once in the second set as well, but just like the first set, she broke Gracheva’s serve on three occasions to wrap up the contest.
On Wednesday, she had saved three of four break points and converted half of eight to win the contest 6-3, 6-2.
This will be the third time when Sorribes Tormo will feature in the quarterfinals this year. She reached consecutive quarterfinals in Guadalajara and Monterrey but couldn’t reach the semifinals.
On Friday, the 25-year-old will be hoping to reach a first semifinal, since losing her final four match in Cleveland last August. She goes into the quarterfinals in good form having won four matches on the trot now, which includes her two straight set wins in the Billie Jean King Cup over the weekend.

Qualifier Potapova Sails into QF
World No. 93 Anastasia Potapova knocked out No. 60 Petra Martic in the second round on Thursday to sail into the quarterfinals in Istanbul.
Potapova, who had beaten the Czech Republic’s Nikola Bartunkova 6-1, 6-4 in the first round, needed an hour and 11 minutes to beat Martic 6-2, 6-3. She saved all five break points that she faced against the Croatian and converted three of four to pick her fourth consecutive win.
She had beaten Dea Herdželaš 6-1, 6-7, 6-2 in the first qualifying round and then knocked out Andrea Lazaro Garcia 6-2, 6-4 in the second qualifying round.
The 21-year-old, ranked 122nd in the world, is in the quarterfinals for the first time this season and the two-time WTA finalist will be hoping to keep the winning run going on Friday.
