It has been a strong start to her clay court campaign for Jabeur, having first appeared in Charleston early in April. The Tunisian got past some tricky opponents to make it to the final there before Belinda Bencic took her down in a challenging encounter to deny Jabeur the title.
This was followed by wins over former French Open finalist Marketa Vondrousova and Russia’s Daria Kasatkina in Stuttgart. In the quarterfinals, however, Jabeur was stopped by the Spaniard Paula Badosa in another fighting three-setter.
Earlier this season, Jabeur, who had earlier risen to seventh in the world, would have loved to do a lot better than the two back to back wins she achieved in four of the tournaments she had featured in on hard court surfaces.
Jabeur, who had made the third round here last year, should be confident of making a solid start in this season’s competition. That should also give her a chance to showcase she can go further than her career-best showing in Madrid.

Paolini 7-8 This Year
It’s been anything but a year to remember for Paolini with the Italian world number 46 winning just seven matches spread across eight tournaments.
Her best showing came at the Indian Wells Open where she reached the third round, but that was followed by a first round exit in Miami.
Following that, Paolini has played in just one WTA tournament and that was her initiation to clay competitions for the year. It came at Charleston where Paolini defeated 234rd-ranked Gabriela Lee before Jessica Pegula routed her 6-1, 6-2 in the second round.
With that kind of form and the pedigree of opponent she is facing, Paolini could be up against it coming up in this first round encounter.
