Anhelina Kalinina v Sloane Stephens Head to Head
Stephens won their only meeting at the U.S. Open in 2018.

Can Kalinina Impress on Madrid Debut?
World No. 37 Anhelina Kalinina is all set to make her debut in Madrid. The Ukrainian has an 8-7 win-loss record this season and is coming off a first round defeat to Croatia’s Peta Martic in Istanbul.
Kalinina, who broke into the top 50 for the first time this season, soared to a career-high ranking of No. 36 to weeks ago thanks to her solid performances in Miami and Charleston.
The 25-year-old had reached the Round of 16 in Miami before retiring against Jessica Pegula and she also reached the quarterfinals in Charleston before falling to Ons Jabeur.
Kalinina is a dangerous player on clay. She reached her maiden WTA final in Budapest last year, falling to Yulia Putintseva in the final.
The 2014 U.S. Open girls’ singles runner-up has won 13 of her 15 ITF titles on the surface. Having already produced her best result at a WTA 1000 event in Miami, Kalinina will now be hoping to make a mark in Madrid.

Stephens Looking for Season’s First Win on Clay
World No. 43 Sloane Stephens may be ranked lower than Kalinina but the American is far more experienced. She is a Grand Slam champion who captured her seventh tour-level title earlier this year in Guadalajara. What’s more, Stephens has a 60% win record on clay, which makes her a superior player than her first round opponent.
The 2017 U.S. Open champion is 6-4 this season and has won just one match outside Guadalajara, where she picked the title by beating Marie Bouzkova in a three-set finale.
Her only other win came against Hungary’s Panna Udvardy in the first round in Miami. So, it has been an up-and-down year so far for Stephens, who most recently fell in the first round of the Charelston Open, a tournament where she was a champion in 2016.
The 29-year-old, who was a runner-up at the French Open in 2018 will be hoping to get her first win on clay this season on Wednesday. She was 10-5 on the surface last season, making the semifinals in Parma and the fourth round at Roland Garros.
In Madrid, she has an 11-7 record and was a semifinalist in 2019. Last year, she lost in the second round to Ons Jabeur.
Kalinina v Stephens Prediction and Tip
This should be a good contest, but given Stephens’ experience, she will be the favourite to advance.
