Garbiñe Muguruza v Ajla Tomljanović Head to Head
Muguruza leads 3-2. Tomljanovic won their first meeting in Miami in 2014 and also the most latest meeting in Indian Wells last year.
Muguruza had won in Monterrey in 2018 and at the Australian Open and in Doha in 2020.

Muguruza Back in Action
World No. 9 Garbine Muguruza is set to return to court after missing out on more than a month’s action due to a shoulder injury. The Spaniard had pulled out of Miami, Charleston and the Billie Jean King Cup following her shock defeat to Alison Riske in her opening match in Indian Wells.
The 10-time tour-level champion will make her eighth appearance in Madrid. Surprisingly, this has been the only tournament where se has failed to produce good results. Her best was a Round of 16 in 2018 and she was knocked out in the first round in her last appearance in 2019.
The 2016 Roland Garros champion has not reached another clay court final at the tour level in her career, but a 65% win record on the surface suggests she could be winning another soon.
The 28-year-old has found the going tough so far this year. She brings a 5-5 record to Madrid and will be desperate to string a few wins together in the tournament.
The former no. 1 had won three titles from five finals last year, which included the year-end WTA Finals title. Thanks to those triumphs she ended 2021 with a 42-17 record.
Muguruza couldn’t maintain that sort of form this year. The Spaniard lost in the quarterfinals in Sydney and Doha and has not one two matches in a row in any of the tournaments other than Doha.

Tomljanovic Searching for Form
After a sedate start to the season Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic reached her first quarterfinal of the season in Istanbul last week and will hope to continue building on that.
A four-time finalist on the tour, Tomljanovic reached a clay court final in Rabat in 2018. She is 6-9 this year in the main draws and 8-10 including qualifiers.
Tomljanovic, who reached her maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal in Wimbledon last year, doesn’t have an encouraging record in Madrid, having won just one main draw match in 2015 against Belinda Bencic. She lost in the opening rounds in 2019 and 2021. Can she win another match in her fourth appearance?
Seems unlikely as it’s been a tough year so far for the World No. 38, who won two matches in a row for the first time in 2022 in Istanbul last week and there too, that second win came after her opponent Lesia Tsurenko retired while trailing 4-6, 0-1.
Muguruza v Tomljanović Prediction and Tip
This has been an interesting rivalry and it promises to be another good contest. But it’s their first meeting on clay and Muguruza will have the upper hand. Expect the Spaniard to advance with a win.
Tip: Muguruza to win in three sets: 1/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
