Fernandez Set for Madrid Debut

2021 U.S. Open finalist Leylah Fernandez is 10-5 this season. The 19-year-old Canadian, who her maiden title in Monterrey last year, successfully defended it this year by defeating Camila Osorio in the final.

Fernandez also reached the Round of 16 for the second consecutive time at Indian Wells. She has lacked consistency in the other tournaments this year and is 0-1 on clay having lost her opening match in Charleston.

Last year, she had a 3-3 record on clay and she was 2-1 the year before, when she reached the third round of the French Open. So, she is yet to make an impression on clay at the tour-level. But all that could change on her Madrid debut. While she has delivered better results on hard courts, it would be wrong to say that she struggles on clay.

She hasn’t had too many opportunities on the surface at the top level, but at the lower level, not too long ago she was crowned the French Open girls champion in 2019.

Fernandez is coming off back-to-back wins over Latvia in the Billie Jean King Cup.

Kasatkina Is a Former Quarterfinalist

She started off well with consecutive semifinal appearances in Melbourne and Sydney and a third round finish at the Australian Open, but has failed to go deep in the other tournaments.

One of the reasons for Kasatkina’s failures has been Iga Swiatek. The Polish player defeated the Russian in the Round of 32 at the Australian Open, then she beat Kasatkina again in the first round in Dubai and again in the third round in Doha.

Overall, the Russian is 12-8 from all her matches this year. She has a 58% win record on clay and will be playing for the first time on the surface in 2022.

A four-time tour level champion, Kasatkina’s only title on clay came in Charleston in 2017. She had reached four finals last year, winning two and finishing runner-up twice.

In Madrid, Kasatkina will be making her sixth appearance. She was a quarterfinalist in 2018, but has made three first round exits. Last year, she won the first round match but lost in the second round.

Fernandez v Kasatkina Prediction and Tip

Kasatkina’s experience on clay and in Madrid should help her in this contest. Expect the Russian to begin with a win.
