Return After Injury for Pavlyuchenkova

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova played in the French Open final last year so her clay prowess is well known however coming back after not playing for several months is always tricky. The Russian last played at the Australian Open and since then it’s been mostly recovery from injury.

This will be her first event and a very tough opponent to start. Pavlyuchenkova plays a very aggressive style of play that can really shine on clay courts. Madrid rewards that type of play and she played in the semifinal last year. It will be very interesting to see what sort of rhythm she has in this one.

On the one hand, she will be very rusty but on another, if she can find her rhythm early she can still win this match. She dominated Sorribes in many of their previous matches so if all things were equal she would be the favourite here as well.

Better Luck This Time for Sorribes

Sara Sorribes Tormo will be playing her 4th Madrid Open event and she never advanced past the 2nd round. There is a very clear reason for that and it’s the geography. Madrid has a high elevation so the ball travels faster than at sea level and that’s something that does not work out in her favour.

She is very vulnerable against attacking players, especially those are not keen to play long rallies. Sorribes Tormo mostly defends on clay forcing her opponents into mistakes which can work well but if she runs into a buzzsaw she usually gets killed.

Last year she was 2-5 on and this year she is 2-1 on clay and 9-7 overall. Generally, her playstyle works a bit better on hard courts as players tend to make more mistakes but the conditions and history don’t bode well for Sara which is a shame, cause she loves playing at home.

Pavlyuchenkova v Sorribes Tormo Prediction and Tip

This one is very hard to predict. On one hand, we have a matchup that the Russian dominates because her playstyle doesn’t suit the Spaniard at all. On the other hand, we have the Russian who has not played in several months. Players tend to struggle after such long layoffs, especially with their movement and timing.

Against a defensive player who will rely heavily on the mistakes of her opponent to win, that can mean trouble. Overall I think this match will still be on the racquet of the Russian. She will either win the match or lose it as I don’t think her opponent will hit harder at any point in this match.

How that works out I have no idea. We might see three sets as the Russian fins a bit of form eventually and we might see a very long match because the Spaniard does not mind playing long rallies. Either way, be careful about this one but I’m going to follow the aggression. Take the Russian as she is simply too strong from the baseline.

Tip: Pavlyuchenkova to win in three sets: 3/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
