Cirstea Coming off a Great Run
World No. 27 Sorana Cirstea is having herself quite a season; she is 14-9 already and looks quite primed to build on it further in the clay swing.
Last week, the 32-year-old Romanian featured in the Istanbul Cup where she made it to the semifinal before losing to Veronika Kudermetova. Cirstea delivered a similar performance in Lyon where she fell just shy of the final spot – this time losing to Dayana Yastremka.
Apart from this, she also reached the round of 16 in a couple of big events – the Australian Open and Indian Wells Open. In both those tournaments, Cirstea defeated the likes of Anna Kalinskaya, Ajla Tomljanovic, Petra Kvitova, and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
As for her ability to play on clay, it is fair to say that she is more comfortable on this surface than any other. Her last two finals have come on this turf – both in 2022 in Istanbul and Strasbourg. She is also a two-time quarterfinalist in Madrid although, in the last two editions, she has failed to make it past the opening rounds.

Diaz, Sailing in a Different Boat
By contrast, Nuria Parrizas Diaz hasn’t had that great of a run of late. She lost her first-round bouts in Miami and Indian Wells (respectively to Shelby Rogers and Beatriz Haddad Maia) while in Istanbul, she fell to the 72nd-ranked Anna Bondar.
The 30-year-old Spaniard has had her moments this season, notably in Monterrey where she reached the semis and in Melbourne (quarterfinal in WTA 250 and round three in the Slam). On the back of these results, Diaz made her top 50 debut in the ranking.
But the way forward will only get difficult for her. Although she is experienced, she has kept herself restricted mainly to the low-tier events where she has seen some success. Last year, she picked up five ITF titles and two WTA 125 trophies. She can put up a fight but whether she can hold her own against the more prominent players is a different story.
Cirstea v Diaz Prediction and Tip
Cirstea is the clear favourite here but Diaz, on her part, will make things quite difficult for her. At the end, however, the Romanian should come out on the top.
