Alejandro Davidovich-Fokina v Frances Tiafoe Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 22-year old Spaniard, and the American, who is two years older.

Monte Carlo Finalist Davidovich-Fokina

Davidovich-Fokina is playing his first tournament since Monte Carlo, where he beat the world number one Novak Djokovic in the second round, and went on to reach his first Masters final before losing to the defending champion Stefanos Tsitsipas.

After being given a draw in the first round in Portugal, he had a seemingly easy task against compatriot Bernabe Zapata Miralles.

However, it was a rather scrappy match, with a number of dropped serves. That sequence started in the middle of the first set when five consecutive games went against serve, Davidovich-Fokina emerging a break up at the end of it.

One more break was enough to give him the set.

However, he was the first to drop his serve in the second set, but Zapata-Miralles could not take full advantage. He was broken in turn, and then the pair swapped breaks.

The world number 123 then had a golden opportunity when he broke Davidovich-Fokina yet again and served for the second set. But he could not take it, was broken himself and it went to a tie-break, which the number four seed eventually clinched.

Tiafoe Recovers from Illness

Tiafoe reached the final on his debut in Estoril in 2018, but the chances of him repeating that seemed remote in his first-round match with the Serb Dusan Lajovic.

Already feeling a little unwell before the match, he began to feel worse, and was a set and a break down, but a medical time-out helped to save him. The physio worked with him, and he recovered to level the match, and then run away with the third set.

The Portuguese wildcard Nuno Borges, the world number 131, seemed an easy second round opponent on paper, but the first two sets were anything but simple.

Although both men had break opportunities in the first set, neither could convert any of them and it went to a tie-break which the American claimed.

But one break of serve was enough to give Nuno the second set and, at that stage, it seemed like the match could go either way.

But, for the second successive match, Tiafoe found inner strength and blew away his opponent in the third set. The Portuguese man did not win another game, as the American booked his quarter-final place.

Davidovich-Fokina v Tiafoe Prediction and Tip

Although the pair are separated by just one place in the world rankings and seedings, the surface definitely favours the Spaniard. If he can find the form that took him to the final in Monte Carlo, he should come out on top.
