Just in 2020, van de Zandschulp was outside the top 200 of the ATP Rankings. Consistent performances at all levels of men’s competition have propelled him to 40th in the world at the moment, his career-best ranking.
And by the time he takes to court for this opening round encounter in Madrid, van de Zandschulp would have gained a few more places following his showing in Munich.
At the time of writing this, van de Zandschulp has already made it to the semifinal at ATP Munich, but more importantly after having shocked Casper Ruud in the quarterfinals.
Earlier he had also made the quarterfinal in Marrakesh, but a performance like the one in Munich should boost van de Zandschulp’s no end.
His issue coming into this encounter would be the lack of gap between the end of the previous tournament and the start of this one. Can he continue with the same momentum?
