Fabio Fognini v Nikoloz Basilashvili Head to Head
The pair have played each other once before, at the Cincinnati Masters last year, Fognini winning in straight sets. They were due to meet also at Indian Wells in March, but Basilashvili earned a walk over when Fognini was forced to pull out of the tournament.

Fognini’s Terrible Record in Madrid
When Fognini won the Monte Carlo Masters in 2019, some thought that the Italian would go on to win more titles, but it has not quite worked out that way for the Italian.
He also has a very poor record in Madrid – he has been coming here every year since 2012, and the best he has ever managed is a second round appearance five years ago.
However, if he is to look for encouragement, it lies in the fact that his two best results in 2022 have both come on clay, and, in each case, he lost in the semi-final to the eventual winner.
It first happened in Rio where he was beaten by Carlos Alcaraz, and then, more recently in Belgrade, where it was Andrey Rublev who ended his run.

But Basilashvili’s is Even More Dire!
Basilashvili has an even more dire Madrid record than Fognini – in his three previous visits he has never been beyond the first round. In fact, his record in all Masters events is poor, the one outlier being Indian Wells 18 months ago, where he reached the final before losing to the British player Cameron Norrie.
The Georgian has just appeared in Munich where he was the defending champion, but this year he lost at the quarter-final stages to the world number 38, Miomir Kecmanovic of Serbia, beaten in straight sets.
His best result of the year so far came in Doha where he reached his first final of 2022, beaten in straight sets again, this time by the Spaniard, Roberto Bautista-Agut.
Fognini v Basilashvili Prediction and Tip
Given that both men have such terrible records in this tournament, this is unlikely to be a classic. The good news for one of them is that there has to be a victor, and, as a former winner of a Masters event on clay, Fognini will be hoping that it will be him.
