Jabeur Battles Past Gracheva

World No. 10 Ons Jabeur won a gripping battle against Russia’s Varvara Gracheva on Saturday to march into the Round of 16 of the Madrid Open.

With the win, the Tunisian is now one win away from a sixth quarterfinal of the season and a third quarterfinal from three tournaments on clay. She was a finalist in Charleston, and made it to the last eight in Stuttgart last week.

Playing in Madrid for the second time in her career, Jabeur began the tournament with a 7-6 (11-9), 6-1 victory over Jasmine Paolini. On Saturday, she continued her winning run with a 7-5, 0-6, 6-4 win over Gracheva in the second round.

Jabeur got an early break but soon lost the initiative as Gracheva won four consecutive games to surge ahead with a 2-5 lead. She couldn’t take the set though as the Tunisian came back, winning five consecutive games to take the first set.

Tables turned in the second as Gracheva bageled Jabeur with a dominating performance. She dropped just seven points on her serve and five on return to force the deciding set.

With momentum now with the Russian, Jabeur had her back against the wall, but she started the third well with a break of serve. Gracheva got the break back in the sixth game, which started a series of four consecutive breaks with Jabeur going ahead 5-4 and serving for the match. She finally held serve again to oust the World no. 73.

Bencic Extends Unbeaten Run on Clay to Eight Matches

Belinda Bencic’s unbeaten run on clay courts continued as the Swiss knocked out Karolina Muchova in a three-set thriller on Saturday.

The World no. 13 improved her season record to 17-6 and her clay court record to 8-0 in 2022. Her unbeaten streak began at the Charleston Open, where she went on to win the title by beating Jabeur in the final.

Bencic continued her streak in Madrid with a 6-4, 6-1 opening round win over Romanian qualifier Irina-Camelia Begu in the first round on Thursday.

The Tokyo Olympics gold medallist kept the momentum going on Saturday by scoring a tough win over the Czech player. She saved all six break points in the first set, while breaking once to go one set up.

Muchova made a comeback in the second set, breaking Bencic twice, while getting broken just once. With one-set all, both players toughed it out in the third with neither getting broken in the first 10 games.

Bencic finally ended the series of holds by breaking Muchova in the 11th game and then held serve for a 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 win.

The Swiss will be aiming to reach her fifth quarterfinal of the year. She was a quarterfinalist in Sydney and St. Petersburg, and a semifinalist in Miami before winning the title in Charleston.

Jabeur v Bencic Prediction and Tip

It’s a repeat of the Charleston Open final, which Bencic won. She is 2-0 against the Tunisian, and will have the psychological edge going into the match. Expect this to go down the wire, with the Swiss extending her dominance over Jabeur.
