Teichmann Surpasses Fernandez

Jil Teichmann continues to shine in Madrid, having just defeated the US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez 6-4, 6-4. This win followed a similar straight-set victory over the three-time Grand Slam finalist Petra Kvitova in the opener.

Currently ranked World No. 35, it has been a decent year for the 24-year-old who managed to reach her career-best ranking as #31 in January. That said, the Swiss hasn’t been among the most consistent performer on the tour this season, having lost early in St. Petersburg, Adelaide, Miami, Indian Wells, and Istanbul.

She did reach the quarterfinal in Dubai as a qualifier to mark the second-best singles run of her career, right behind her runner-up in the Cincinnati Open last season.

Teichmann has also got two clay titles on the WTA Tour and 10 ITF finals on the same surface. She has also beaten a handful of top 10 players in her career and is well-primed to reach the quarterfinal here.

Rybakina Enjoys a Walkover

Elena Rybakina found herself in a comfortable match against the doubles No. 1 Katerina Siniakova; she took an early lead with 6-0, 1-0 before the Czech retired. In the preceding game, she overcame Oceane Dodin 6-2, 7-5.

The Kazakh is now 16-7 in 2022 and after a rough, injury-mired start to the season (which was preceded a title run in Adelaide 500), things are looking up for her again.

Now ranking World No. 18, Rybakina’s other best run of the season came in Indian Wells where she reached the quarterfinal. However, in Charleston and Stuttgart, she was beaten early by Anhelina Kalinina and Paula Badosa.

Even though the 22-year-old had a rather muted spell in 2021 (quarterfinal in French Open and fourth-place in the Olympics), she was on fire in the preceding year. Rybakina reached five singles finals to mark her breakthrough season.

Teichmann v Rybakina Prediction and Tip

Rybakina is the odds-on favourite here, there is no denying it. On her best day, she can easily dismiss Teichmann but the Swiss has been in a fine form herself; she has also got a rich clay pedigree and will make things difficult for the Kazakh.

This match can swing either way but we may be looking at three sets here.
