Ilya Ivashka v Lorenzo Musetti Head to Head

They never played before.

Ivashka, the Kind of Solid

Ilya Ivashka is a very solid tennis player. Nothing more, nothing less.

The Belarussian has never been the greatest of clay players but in recent weeks he has shown a very solid level on the surface and against some strong opposition. It’s been a good return for him after missing several weeks with injuries and things will only get better.

Ivashka should theoretically do well in Marid as he has a pretty decent serve and a pretty decent baseline play. He last played in Madrid in 2018 so it will take him so time to adjust. His opponent knows the courts much better but Ivashka’s play should naturally fit better in the Spanish capital.

He’s 5-7 on the year but 2-3 on clay with some strong showings lately. The match against Tsitsipas in Barcelona was really strong and I have kind of liked him ever since. He won one match in Munich and lost another which is fine enough for the ever-solid Belarussian.

Musetti Barely Coming Through

Lorenzo Musetti barely came into the main draw as he had to play the qualifiers. It was a tough going especially in the 2nd match against a native player who pushed him really hard. Musetti will be glad to be in the main draw but he could have preserved some energy.

Getting back out so soon will be tricky, especially against a player whose game is more suited for Madrid compared to his. He tends to do best on very slow clay courts where he can create angles with his solid groundstrokes but Madrid leaves him quite vulnerable.

He defeated Yoshihito Nishioka in round 1 of the qualifiers because the Japanese player is rather passive. He nearly lost against the aggressive Spaniard and he might be in trouble against Ivashka as well.

Overall Musetti’s 13-11 on the year which is okay.

Ivashka v Musetti Prediction and Tip

So this is a very interesting matchup for me as the players never played against each other. Musetti is far more adapted to the conditions in Madrid but Ivashka has been in the capital for a few days so he should have a good idea of how it is.

He’s the naturally more aggressive player which should do him well. If he can attack Musetti early and often he should have the advantage. Musetti’s particularly vulnerable in Madrid but he will need to be consistent with his play.

He must serve well to stay in the match because if he doesn’t he’s in big trouble. I think the over is the best play here. I can’t see how this does not go three but if I had to pick a winner I’d lean Ivashka. He’s been pretty solid in the past few weeks but I like the over more.

Tip: Ivashka to win in three sets: 5/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
