Alejandro Davidovich Fokina v Hubert Hurkacz Head to Head

The pair have never played each other three times before, and Davidovich-Fokina leads their head to head series by two matches to one.

The Spaniard won their first two meetings at the US Open in 2020 and in Montpellier last year, although Hurkasz was the victor six months later in Cincinnati.

All their previous meetings have been on hard courts though – this will be their first match on clay.

Spaniard Beats South African Number One

Davidovich-Fokina reached his first Masters final in Monte Carlo last month, and he began his campaign on home soil with a comfortable win over Lloyd Harris, the world number 38, a man who is still searching for his best form in 2022.

It was Harris, though, who created the first break point of the match in the opening game, but the South African number one could not take it, and the match became a serving contest after that. However, serving to stay in the set the Harris serve came under pressure for the first time. He saved one set point, but not the second, and Davidovich-Fokina had the lead.

The second set again was dominated by serve up until the time that Harris dropped his serve once more. That gave Davidovich-Fokina to chance to serve out to love next game.

Hurkacz Given Tough Examination by Qualifier

When Hurkacz was drawn against the Bolivian qualifier Hugo Dellien, he knew that he could have had a harder first round opponent, albeit knowing he was facing a clay court specialist.

However, he probably could not have anticipated how difficult he would find it to beat the world number 81.

The first set was the blueprint for what was to come, with Dellien going an early break up, and having a set point, only to fail to convert it. That gave Hurkacz the chance to break back, and another break gave him the set.

The nip and tuck continued into the second set, Hurkacz going a break up, only for Dellien to immediately cancel that out, and then the Pole went behind, only to respond straight away with a  break of his own.

That meant a tie-break which developed into a saga of its own. It featured 24 points in the course of which Hurkasz saw three match come and go, whilst Dellien saw three set points saved. It was finally decided in favour of the Bolivian.

However, Dellien dropped his serve at the start of the third set, and Hurkacz finally had the chance to put some daylight between them. One more dropped serve by the Bolivian, and the Pole could finally claim victory.

Davidovich-Fokina v Hurkacz Prediction and Tip

Although Hurkacz is the higher ranked of the pair, Davidovich-Fokina has the better head to head record, and the surface and home advantage tends to favour him.
