Zverev Overcomes Auger-Aliassime
Defending champion and second seed Alexander Zverev is back into the semifinals in Madrid with a straight sets win over Felix Auger-Aliassime on Friday.
The World No. 3, who faced a shock second round defeat to Holger Rune in Munich in the last tournament, will be featuring in just his third semifinal this year. He was a finalist in Montpellier and a semifinalist in Monte-Carlo, where Tsitsipas ended his run with a straight sets shellacking.
Thanks to his most recent success on Friday, the German improved his season record to 20-7. He was slow off the blocks in the second round, but overcame a one-set deficit to rally past Marin Cilic. He had an easier outing in the Round of 16, with Lorenzo Musetti retiring with an injury after losing the first set.
The 25-year-old will now be aiming to reach a 10th Masters final on Saturday.
Zverev, who triumphed in Madrid in 2019 and 2021, won his eighth consecutive match in the Spanish capital, ousting the eighth seed Canadian 6-3, 7-5.
The German was in the ascendency from the start. He didn’t face a single break point in the first set but capitalised on both the breaking chances to take a one-set-to-love lead. The second set was a close one with Auger-Aliassime creating four breaking opportunities but Zverev saved three of them. He himself held eight break points, converting two of those chances.

Tsitsipas Holds Off Rublev
World no. 5 Stefanos Tsitsipas inched closer to a second Masters title this season as the Monte-Carlo champion knocked out sixth seed Andrey Rublev in the quarterfinals on Friday.
The 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 win over the Russian put the Greek into the semifinals in Madrid for the second time in his career. The 23-year-old was a finalist in 2019, but was denied the title by Novak Djokovic.
Tsitsipas, who had won his maiden Masters title by beating Rublev in Monte-Carlo last year, defended the Masters 1000 title this year by defeating Alejandro Davodovich Fokina in the title match. He was also a finalist in Rotterdam this season and Friday’s win improved his 2022 record to 27-8, which includes a run to the semifinals at the Australian Open.
The 23-year-old, who had come into the quarterfinal with straight sets wins over Lucas Pouille and Grigor Dimitrov in the second and third rounds respectively, struck 10 aces against Rublev’s 5. Broken twice in the second set, Tsitsipas saved three of five break points in the match, while breaking Rublev once each in the first and third sets.
The victory that came in two hours gave Tsitsipas a 5-4 lead in the rivalry. This is the fifth time this season when he will be featuring in the semifinals. Can he reach a third final in 2022?
Zverev v Tsitsipas Prediction and Tip
It’s a rivalry that has been dominated by the Greek and that will give him the psychological edge in the semifinal. What’s more, Zverev has never beaten Tsitsipas on clay and that would put more pressure on the German. Expect the Greek to extend his dominance and advance to the final.
