Reilly Opelka v Stan Wawrinka Head to Head

They played once before and it happened in Wimbledon in 2019. Opelka won 7-5 3-6 4-6 6-4 8-6.

Reilly Opelka is slowly making a name for himself in the world of tennis as the American keeps on progressing and building upon a solid year last year. His record in 2021 was 21-23 and this year it’s 17-8 and he’ll soon eclipse his win total from last year.

It’s just been a positive trend for Opelka who now knows who he has. A superb serve, a good forehand and some solid movement considering his size and all of that give him a chance to win matches consistently. Last year he reached the semifinal in Rome and while that’s unrealistic to happen again it shows his confidence in his games.

He’s coming off of two consecutive losses on clay so it seems like he’s in for some points dropping this week but he’ll overcome that once her tour comes back to the hard courts. For now it’s about staying as solid as you possibly can.

Wawrinka Comeback, Yes or No ?

Stan Wawrinka returned recently after missing pretty much an entire year with multiple injuries and surgeries. The former grand slam champion is not looking very good at the moment and his age makes it questionable whether he will ever return to the top of his game.

Wawrinka spoke about it recently but he wants to try it one more time and see whether he can do it. Since his return, he played two matches and lost boht. He showed some promise in Monte-Carlo but his fitness betrayed him a little bit. He needs matches and wins.

Both will do woners for his confidence but it’s unlikely to come in Rome. The Swiss player never advanced past teh first round in his most recent couple of tries and that doesn’t bode well agianst Opelka who is very solid overall, even on clay.

Opelka v Wawrinka Prediction and Tip

So this one is not tricky to call for me. I think Opelka will win simply because he is younger, more fit and more solid overall. Yes, there is a universe where Wawrinka wins this match but I haven’t been that impressed lately by him. He’s only played two matches and he wasn’t close to winning either of them.

He will have trouble handling the serve and I don’t think her can outhit Opelka from the baseline. It could be close but I don’t see Stan winning. Take Opelka and don’t sweat it.
