Roberto Bautista Agut v Alex de Minaur Head to Head

There have been three previous matches between these two and de Minaur leads 2-1 on head to head. Both his wins came in 2019, while Bautista Agut pulled one back at the 2021 ATP Cup.

The duo is yet to play on clay though.

Bautista Agut Hoping to Rediscover Old Form

The start of the season had been very kind to Bautista Agut, who had won 11 of his first 14 matches spread across four tournaments. This had included a title victory in Doha where he got past the likes of Andy Murray, Nikoloz Basilashvili, Karen Khachanov and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina to lift the trophy.

The form has deserted the Spaniard ever since.

In Dubai, for instance in the tournament that followed, Bautista Agut lost in the second round. A first round bye in Indian Wells was followed by a third round loss and when he repeated the same at Miami, falling to Jenson Brooksby things weren’t looking too good for the Spaniard.

Bautista Agut returned to the circuit last week in what was his first tournament on clay and while he registered a comfortable first round win, he fell to Dan Evans in the second round again.

Can he bring back some of his old mojo coming into this tournament?

de Minaur 5-3 on Clay This Year

A shock semifinalist at Barcelona Open this season, de Minaur has managed to improve his clay court record in 2022 by leaps and bounds.

The Aussie had entered this year’s Monte Carlo Masters with an appalling 6-16 win-loss record on red dirt in his career but has come back strongly this season. He made it to the second round at both, Monte Carlo and Madrid, losing only to Andrey Rublev and Jannik Sinner and then turned on his performances at Barcelona where de Minaur reached the last four.

Wins over Ugo Humbert, Lloyd Harris and Cameron Norrie would have given him a shot in his arm and as he enters this opening round encounter, de Minaur will know he has it in him to turn the screws on his opponent.

Can he overcome those 11/10 odds on offer for this victory though?

Bautista Agut v de Minaur Prediction and Tip

Bautista Agut starts off a 8/11 favourite in this one but we are backing de Minaur to claw his way out of early trouble and edge ahead.

Tip: De Minaur to win: 11/10 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
