Thiem Continues Victory Search Upon Return
2020 US Open winner and two time French Open finalist Dominic Thiem continues his return to the tour.
After losing out in the first round of the ATP Challenger in Marbella, Thiem returned to the main tour last month at the Serbia Open in Belgrade.
The Austrian opened his campaign against Aussie John Millman in a match that went to a decider which was scalped by Millman with Thiem broken to love serving to stay in the match at 4-5.
The former world number three continued his quest to return to the level he was at during the 2019-2020 timeframe and was hoping for a better run the following week in Estoril heading into the clay Masters 1000s and the French Open in May.
However, another up and down performance followed from the Austrian and despite a strong showing in the second set, it was a straight set loss in the tiebreak to Benjamin Bonzi of France.
Thiem returned to Madrid this week where he was runner-up in 2017 and 2018 as well as semi-finalist last year and looking to a familiar venue to rekindle good form and mark his clay revival.
Up against former world number one Andy Murray, it was evident how far behind the Austrian is in his comeback and despite some good tennis and points, it was a straight set loss for Thiem against Murray.
The 2020 US Open champion arrives in Rome a little desperate to get form, results and confidence ahead of the French Open in two weeks from now

Fognini Hoping For Form At Home
Italy’s Fabio Fognini had a sub-par start to the season with underwhelming performances at the Aussie Open, the Latam clay swing and the Sunshine Masters, with a semi-final run at Rio being the only positive performance.
The Monte Carlo champion in 2019 began his clay campaign back there again but lost a one-sided battle to 2021 and eventually 2022 champion Stefanos Tsitsipas.
It was a better showing at the Serbia Open in Belgrade the following week as Fognini made the semi-finals before losing out to eventual champion Andrey Rublev, who went on to beat world number one and home favorite Novak Djokovic in the final.
Fognini lost his opener to Nikoloz Bailashvili in Madrid and will be hoping for better form this week at home , with the French Open now around the corner.
The nine-time ATP title winner Fognini was a quarter-finalist in Rome in 2018, but has not been past the first round in the last two years and will be looking for a better run this time around.
Thiem v Fognini Prediction and Tip
This is a crucial match for both players as they both look to revive their form and seasons ahead of the French Open. It is all the more important for Thiem who is searching for some confidence ahead of the second major of the year, one that he was once earmarked to be the biggest threat at to the King of Clay, Rafa Nadal.
Expect a tight match but the Austrian has felt better with every match and this time should prevail and break the jinx since his return to the tour.
Thiem to prevail in a scrappy decider.
