Simona Halep v Alize Cornet Head to Head

Simona Halep did not enjoy her last trip to Rome. A calf injury in her opening match against Angelique Kerber forced her to retire from the tournament and subsequently miss out on the next three months of tour-level tennis. It also meant that Halep would not feature at both the French Open and Wimbledon – the latter in which she forfeited her status as defending champion.

And although she would embark on her comeback season in North America and beyond, she finished the year without winning a single title for the first time since 2013.

But bad times did not last long for Halep who came full circle in the opening week of the 2022 season when she won the Melbourne Summer Set 1 in Australia. Halep’s Australian Open campaign did not go to plan as she fell to her nemesis Alize Cornet in the Round of 16.

The Romanian former World No. 1 has since reached two semifinals on hard courts and a quarterfinal on her first outing on clay in Madrid.

Cornet Yet To Recreate Australian Open Miracle

Alize Cornet produced her best Grand Slam result at this year’s Australian Open when she reached the quarterfinal for the first time in her 63rd attempt. The Frenchwoman pulled off one shock after another in Melbourne, not least, slaying the likes of Garbine Muguruza and Simona Halep along the way.

The emotional toll of that achievement has been too much to handle for Cornet who has won a paltry three matches from seven tournaments.

But since she re-entered the world’s Top 40, Cornet has thrust her name into the main draws of top-tier WTA tournaments instead of playing qualifying matches.

Cornet has never advanced beyond the second round at the Italian Open since she memorably reached the final in 2008 on her main draw debut. Can she upstage Halep again?
