2014 U.S Open champion will be making his 14th main draw appearance in Rome. The 24-year-old Croatian has a 16-13 record in the tournament and his best performances included a semifinal finish in 2018 and two quarterfinal finishes in 2011 and 2017.
Although clay has been one of the least preferred surfaces for Cilic (at least the stats would suggest that), he still has a 61% win rate on the surface, and has won two of his 20 titles on clay. Four of his 15 runner-up finishes on the tour have also been on clay. But he has been so good on hard and grass courts that his record on those surfaces overshadow his clay record.
This year, Cilic is 11-10 overall and 2-3 on clay. While he made second round exits from Monte-Carlo and Madrid, he was knocked out in the opening round in Estoril.
Cilic’s early season form was pretty good as he began the year by reaching consecutive semifinals in Adelaide and the fourth round of the Australian Open, but since then he struggled to win consecutive matches. He will be expected to win his opener on Sunday, but can he make a deep run in Rome?

Arnaldi Making His Debut
Facing Cilic, will be World No. 277 Matteo Arnaldi, who received a wild card for the tournament and will be playing his first tour-level match on Sunday.
The 21-year-old has two ITF titles, both on clay. He is yet to reach a final at the Challenger level, where he has an overall record of 6-9 this year.
He is 6-6 on clay and in his most recent tournaments, he was a semifinalist in Split and lost in the Round of 16 in Rome 1.
Playing on the biggest stage in front of home crowd, Arnaldi will be looking to make a bright start. Getting a win will be a huge ask, but the Italian will look to put up a fight against teh vastly experienced Cilic.
