Shelby Rogers v Alison Riske Head to Head

Remarkably, Rogers and Riske have not faced each other at tour level prior to this. Their only head-to-head meetings took place on the ITF circuit over eight years ago, tied at 1-1.

Rogers Far From Her Best In 2022

At this time last year, Shelby Rogers had built some much-needed momentum heading to the clay-court season. A fourth-round showing at the Australian Open sandwiched between two quarterfinals in two hard court tournaments Down Under gave her the platform to make an imprint on the dirt.

But Rogers’ 2022 season doesn’t quite mirror her results from the first quarter of last season. With a 6-9 record heading to the Italian Open, the American is still chasing her first win on the clay.

Defeats to Kaia Kanepi and Yulia Putintseva in back-to-back clay-court tournaments along with a singles defeat at the Billie Jean King Cup, have stretched her losing streak to four matches. Her last win on tour remains the shock victory over Jelena Ostapenko at the Miami Open at the end of March.

If Rogers was targeting a return to winning ways in Rome, that could spell bad news. She has played the Italian Open three times before, losing in the qualifying rounds on her first trip in 2015, and then losing in the first round in each of her last two visits.

Can she turn the tide on Monday against Alison Riske?

Riske Also Looking To Snap Rome Losing Streak

It isn’t just Rogers who is looking to turn around her Rome record, but Riske’s one main draw win in seven visits beggars belief. Despite her underwhelming win-loss record on the surface, the 31-year-old Riske has had her fair share of winnable first-round matches in the past.

Records aside, Riske has played some fine tennis on hard courts. Her major highlight of this 2022 season is a runner-up finish in Adelaide. She also made the third round of Indian Wells she posted a first top 10 win of the season in beating Garbine Muguruza.

Riske rounded off her North American hardcourt swing with a fourth-round showing in Miami. Six of her nine defeats this year have come against some of the very best players in the world. The likes of Madison Keys (twice), Simona Halep, Naomi Osaka, and Aryna Sabalenka stood in her path.

Rogers v Riske Prediction and Tip

Just six spots separate Rogers and Riske in the WTA rankings. But there can be no doubt that the 31-year-old Riske has had a better season than her counterpart. Riske’s clay-court skills though might not be up to the task against the dangerous Rogers.
