Camila Giorgi v Ajla Tomljanovic Head to Head

The pair have played each other twice before, but never on clay. Giorgi won on the hard courts of Sydney in 2019, and again on the grass of Eastbourne last year, both times in straight sets.

Giorgi on a Poor Run of Form

Giorgi has a very disappointing record in what is a home event foe her. She has never been beyond the second round in four previous appearances, something she will be looking to improve upon this time round.

In fact, for an Italian player brought up on clay, all her biggest successes on the WTA tour have come on hard courts, including her most recent title, and the biggest of her career to date, the Canadian Open last August.

However, she comes in the tournament this year off the back of a poor run of form.

Since reaching the third round of the Australian Open where she was beaten by Ashleigh Barty, she has not won a single match on the WTA tour, her latest defeat coming in Madrid, where she went out in the first round in three sets to the eventual finalist, Jessica Pegula.

Her only victories in that time came in the Billie Jean King Cup, playing for her country against lower ranked French opposition.

Tomljanovic Not Unfamiliar with Italian Conditions

Tomljanovic has an almost identical record to Giorgi in Rome, having never reached further than the second round in four previous visits.

However. Italian conditions should not be unfamiliar to the woman who has now inherited the Australian number one mantle – she has been in a relationship with Matteo Berrettini for several years now, and would have practiced with him on his native clay.

However, clay is not her natural milieu – she was brought up on hard courts and all four of her losing WTA finals have come on that surface.

Although she, too, lost in the first round in Madrid, she had been in better form than her opponent prior to that, making the second round in Charleston, and the quarter-finals in Istanbul, where she lost in three sets to the Kazakh  player Yulia Putintseva.

Giorgi v Tomljanovic Prediction and Tip

Giorgi has won both their two previous matches, and, with the benefit of home conditions and with the local crowd behind her, she must start favourite, although neither has a good record in this tournament.

Tip: Giorgi to win: 3/5 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
