Alex de Minaur v Dusan Lajovic Head to Head

There has been one previous meeting between these players with de Minaur trumping Lajovic in straight sets at the 2019 Sydney International.

de Minaur 5-3 on Clay This Year

A shock semifinalist at Barcelona Open this season, de Minaur has managed to improve his clay court record in 2022 by leaps and bounds.

The Aussie had entered this year’s Monte Carlo Masters with an appalling 6-16 win-loss record on red dirt in his career but has come back strongly this season. He made it to the second round at both, Monte Carlo and Madrid, losing only to Andrey Rublev and Jannik Sinner and then turned on his performances at Barcelona where de Minaur reached the last four.

Wins over Ugo Humbert, Lloyd Harris and Cameron Norrie would have given him a shot in his arm and as he enters this opening round encounter, de Minaur will know he has it in him to turn the screws on his opponent.

He was to earlier play Roberto Bautista Agut in this opener but a late withdrawal gives him the opportunity for an easier first round match against a qualifier.

Lajovic Eases into the Main Draw

He was once ranked 23rd in the world but Lajovic has now fallen to 77th on the ATP charts which means he has had to make it through the qualifiers to enter the main draw of this competition. And he did that without too many woes on the way.

Facing Benoit Paire in the first round, Lajovic stormed to a straight set win over the Frenchman. And he followed that up with a 4-0 lead over Marton Fucsovics in the second qualifier before his opponent was forced to retire from the encounter.

This follows another routine qualification for the Madrid Masters, where Lajovic is coming off two strong performances in the main draw.

He first overcame Borna Coric in the opener before shocking Casper Ruud in the second in a hard-fought three-setter. It took the might of Hubert Hurcacz to stop the Serb in the third.

Can he spring up a similar magic here?

de Minaur v Lajovic Prediction and Tip

While de Minaur is an obvious favourite, we are inclined towards giving Lajovic the edge here given his form on clay. Backing him to cause an upset.
