Emil Ruusuvuori has been handed a lucky loser spot straight into the second round as Madrid Champion, Carlos Alcaraz has pulled out of the Italian Open citing a right ankle injury. The spot had a bye in the first round.
The Finnish tennis player is taking part in this tournament for the first time this year. He was part of the qualifying draw. He won 1 match in the qualifiers, beating Giovanni Fonio in 3 sets, and lost to Sebastian Baez in the second round of qualifiers.
The world number 61 was a break up in the third set against the recently crowned Estoril champion, Baez. It was a very intense match that could have gone either way.
Ruusuvuori has already reached the Q/F in Munich, Finals in Pune and R16 in Barcelona. His best ranking is 59, and having a chance to make a deep run in this Masters event, Russuovuori can break into the top 50 for the first time come end of this week.
Ruusuvuori usually wins against lower ranked players or matches in which he is the favourite. He has a 20-12 win-loss record this year and 8-4 on clay.

Garin is Seeking to Turn Around his Clay Season
Cristian Garin won his first round match against Italian Wildcard Francesco Passaro. He won in straight sets (6-3, 6-2) but it wasn’t as comfortable as the score line suggests.
The Chilean has been struggling on his serve this whole season and Passaro created 9 break point opportunities. Any other experienced player on tour would have had a better conversion rate causing Garin more trouble.
Garin has a 5-7 record on clay this year. Surprisingly, he had failed to win a single match in the South American clay swing earlier this year. However, he did reach the semi final in Houston last month, which has been his sole highlight this year.
He has never made it into the round of 16 here, and hence has a challenge to look forward to. Garin needs more results his way as this year’s clay record is turning out to be one of the worst of his career.

As Garin continues to struggle on clay, and his serve also not working, Ruusuvuori will be all over him during his service games. Ruusuvuori has wonderful court coverage and should be able to dominate the baseline game against the Chilean. Expect Ruusuvuori to win.
