Wawrinka Rebounds to Earn First Win in 15 Months

Stan Wawrinka fought back from a set down to topple 14th seed and last year’s semifinalist Reilly Opelka in the first round in Rome on Monday.

The 37-year-old Swiss player, who returned to the tour last month after undergoing two foot surgeries last year, had last won a match at the Australian Open in 2021. He made a return to Marbella Challenger this year and then featured in Monte Carlo, losing in the first rounds of both the tournaments.

Currently ranked 361st in the world, the three-time Grand Slam champion didn’t hold a single break point in the first set, but broke Opelka twice each in the second and third to win the contest 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 in two hours and six minutes.

Wawrinka, who has won seven of his 16 tour-level titles on clay, was a finalist in Rome in 2008 and a semifinalist in 2015. He had lost the first round matches in his last three appearances at the Rome Masters, but ended the streak on Monday to improve his tournament record to 23-15.

Qualifier Djere Continues Marching Forward

Qualifier Laslo Djere moved into the second round with a three-set win over Borna Coric in the opening round on Monday.

In a draining two-hour-and-48-minute contest Djere was stretched by the Croatian, who too made a return to tennis recently after a shoulder surgery kept him out of action for close to a year.

The Serbian, ranked no. 59 in the world, broke Coric twice in the first set to win it with ease. He saved four set points in the second set, but eventually lost it in the tiebreak.

Djere rebounded in the third, breaking Coric two more times and winning the contest 6-2, 6-7 (3-7), 6-2.

The 26-year-old, who improved his season record to 10-10 and his record on clay to 7-5, had qualified for the main draw with straight sets wins over Thanasi Kokkinakis and Hugo Dellien.

The Marrakech Open semifinalist will now be aiming to reach the third round in Rome for the first time in his career.

Wawrinka v Djere Prediction and Tip

A win over the World No. 17 and houston Open champion Reilly Opelka would have given Wawrinka a lot of confidence. The former French Open champion will make it tough for Djere, but eventually the Serbian should win this in three.

Tip: Djere to win in three sets: 3/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
