Tommy Paul v Alex de Minaur Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before, and that was just eight weeks ago in the third round of Indian Wells, de Minaur winning in straight sets.

Paul Will Take Heart from Defeat of Spaniard

As a former junior French Open Champion, Paul has a natural affinity for clay, so it is hard to understand his struggles on the surface so far this year.

Prior to arriving in Rome, he had lost two out of three previous matches on clay in 2022, and gone out of the tournaments in Estoril and Madrid at the first round stage.

He will, therefore, take great heart from the way he was able to beat the experienced Spaniard, Albert Ramos-Vinolas, in their opening round match on Monday.

Paul began strongly with a service break in the opening game. Another break seemed to put him in control of the proceedings, but then he dropped his serve in turn. The pair swapped breaks again, before things settled down, it went back on serve, and the American was able to close out the set.

When the Spaniard went a break up in the second set, he had hopes of staging a comeback. But he immediately surrendered his own serve again, and then Paul forced another break.

There was no way back for the Spaniard after that, and, a few minutes later, the match was over.

De Minaur Cruises Past Serb

De Minaur made the semi-finals in Barcelona before he got in the way of the unstoppable train that is Carlos Alcaraz right now, although at least he took the Spanish teenager to three sets on clay, something not many have done recently.

His run in Madrid was ended by Jannik Sinner, but he made a convincing start to his Rome campaign against the Serb world number 64, Dusan Lajovic.

The first set, although featuring a number of break point opportunities for both men, went with serve.

That was until Lajovic, serving to stay in the set, was broken to love.

The Serb’s best chance to get back in the match came in the third game of the second set when he forced three break points. He failed to take any of them and that was the beginning of the end for him. He would win no further games and de Minaur was able to cruise to victory.

Paul v De Minaur Prediction and Tip

Given that de Minaur won their one previous meeting less than two months ago, and is in good form on clay right now, he will start the favourite in this match.

Tip: Paul to win: 7/10 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
