Rafael Nadal v John Isner  Head to Head

Nadal leads the head-to-head 7-1 with his only loss coming in the 2017 Laver Cup. Their last meeting was also in 2017 in Beijing where Nadal prevailed.  The Spaniard has won all four of their clay meetings.

Nadal Seeks Confident Run Ahead of Paris

21-time major champion Rafael Nadal arrived in Rome seeking to defend his title and win the championship here for a record 11th time.

It was an excellent start to the year for the Spaniard winning the ATP 250 in Melbourne, a record 21st major at the Australian Open, and the Mexican Open. Nadal lost out in the finals of the Indian Wells Masters 1000 to American Taylor Fritz, but the tournament also took a toll on him with a rib injury that saw him miss the Monte Carlo Masters 1000 and the Barcelona Open at the beginning of the clay season.

The 13-time Roland Garros champion returned to the tour last week in Madrid and after a convincing opening round win against the in-form Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic, he was pushed to save four match points by Belgian veteran David Goffin.

Up against the rising Spanish superstar Carlos Alcaraz in the quarter-finals, Nadal lost a tight contest in a deciding third set and was clearly a little short of match fitness and match practice.

The Spaniard arrives in Rome with many fond memories and will be looking for a deep run to give him all the confidence needed ahead of his favorite tournament, i.e. the French Open in less than two weeks.

Strong Isner Start in Rome

It has been a mixed start to the season for big serving American veteran John Isner.

A none too impressive run Down Under was followed by a semi-final appearance at the new Dallas Open where he lost out to fellow American Reilly Opelka. While none of Acupulco or the Sunshine Masters lived up to what Isner may have expected from them, the start to the clay season was an impressive one.

Isner made the title round at the ATP 250 in Houston before losing out once again to Opelka and despite a second round  loss to Cam Norrie, will be looking for a strong showing in Rome ahead of Roland Garros.

Up against Francisco Cerundolo in the opener here in Rome, it was a convincing win for the American in straight sets setting a statement against the young Argentine who had a good run during the LatAm clay swing and at the Miami Masters 1000.

Nadal v Isner Prediction and Tip

This makes for an exciting opening encounter. Although Nadal is a strong favorite on the surface, the Isner serve is never an easy one to tackle. Given the Spaniard is still getting into his ways post injury, the giant serve of the American may cause for some tense moments.

Expect a close encounter with Nadal prevailing in a decider.

Tip: Nadal to win in three sets: 3/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
