They are 1-1 from their previous two meetings. Bencic won in Mallorca in 2019, while Anisimova won this year at the Australian Open.

Bencic Tops Cocciaretto

World No. 14 Belinda Bencic moved into the second round of the Italian Open with a straight sets win over Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto.

This is the fourth time in her sixth appearance that Bencic has reached the second round in Rome, but she is yet to make it past that stage.

The Swiss was broken in the fourth game of the first set but she regrouped quickly to break the wild card twice and take the first set. The 25-year-old was in complete control of the second set, dropping just two points on her serve and 13 points in all to win the contest 6-4, 6-2.

Bencic, who won the Charleston Open last month, improved her season record to 18-7. The five-time tour-level champion is 9-1 on clay and will be looking to improve that record even further on Wednesday.

Anisimova Holds Off Martincova

World No. 32 Amanda Anisimova survived a tough three-setter against Czech qualifier Tereza Martincova to move into the second round in Rome for the fourth consecutive time.

Like Bencic, the American, too, hasn’t ever made it to the third round of the Italian Open. But she has been in good form of late and will be fancying her chances against the Swiss.

Anisimova, was was a semifinalist in Charleston and a quarterfinalist in Madrid, continued her good form in Rome, as she overcame Martincova despite losing the momentum in the second set.

Anisimova didn’t have much trouble in winning the first set, but she was bageled in the second as the momentum shifted towards the Czech. Anisimova fought back in the third set, got the only break in the seventh game and then protected her lead to register a 6-2, 0-6, 6-4 victory.

The win improved Anisimova to 18-7 this season. She had captured her second WTA title this season by triumphing at the Melbourne Summer Set tournament.

Bencic v Anisimova Prediction and Tip

This is going to be a close contest. Both players are in good form and have exactly the same number of wins and losses this year. Three sets seem imminent with Bencic edging past the American.
