Petra Martic v Bianca Andreescu Head to Head

Petra Martic has always fared better on clay than any other surface so it comes as no surprise to see her do well in Rome.

The 31-year-old Croatian started as a qualifier and after clearing them in straight sets, she moved on to dismiss Karolina Muchova (6-2, 3-6, 6-1) and Anett Kontaveit (6-2, 6-3) to reach the third round.

That win over Kontaveit marked Martic’s biggest win of the season; before this, the best she had managed was dismissing the World No. 12 Emma Raducanu en route to the quarterfinal in Indian Wells.

That run, however, was followed and preceded by a litany of early-round defeats in Melbourne, Australian Open, St. Petersburg, Monterrey, Miami, Istanbul, and Madrid. Martic has done well to pick things up here – seeing that she was a semifinalist last season, the precedent is set for her to do it again.

Andreescu, Gaining Confidence

Bianca Andreescu will be pleased with how things have gone for her this season. She started the tour late in April on account of her knee injury.

Since then, the 21-year-old Canadian has reached the second round in Stuttgart and followed it with a third-round stint in Madrid. In both these tournaments, there were plenty of positives as the 2019 US Open champion defeated Alison Riske and Danielle Collins.

Here in the Italian Open – where she is playing under the protected ranking rule – she moved past Emma Raducanu (the Brit retired trailing 2-6, 1-2) and Nuria Parrizas Diaz. Sailing high on confidence, she will fancy her chances with Martic too.

When Bianca Andreescu was in the form of her life (and ranking in the top 10), there was no stopping her. Having won the Canadian Open and Indian Wells Open so early in her career, she is well acquainted with the success and of late, the adversities on the tour.

The current world number 90 has a far superior pedigree and physical advantage when compared to Martic; Andreescu may be tested but ultimately, she should come out on the top.
