Ons Jabeur v Yulia Putintseva Head to Head

The pair have played each other twice before, Jabeur winning on both occasions in straight sets.

Their first meeting  was on hard courts in Tianjin in 2019, and that was followed up by a first round match at last year’s French Open.

Putintseva Comes From Behind to Beat Spaniard

Putintseva came through qualifying in Rome, where she was forced to come from behind against Ana Konjuh of Croatia in her second round match in that tournament.

And it was the same story in her opening round match in the main draw against Konjuh’s compatriot, Kaja Juvan, in that it took three sets for her to finally claim victory.

That earned her a match against the Spanish world number ten Garbine Muguruza, and the match initially went with the form book, one break of serve enough to earn the number eight seed the first set.

Although she was the first to break serve in the second set, Putintseva soon found herself a break down, and Muguruza had the chance to serve for the match. Putintseva, though, dug deep, broke back and it eventually went to a tie-break. Both players struggled but Putintseva proved the stronger and she levelled the match.

That seemed to sap the Spaniard’s resolve and, after the first two games of the third set were shared, Putintseva won five in a row to book her third round place.

Madrid Winner Jabeur Eases Past Australian

Jabeur already came into this tournament full of confidence after she became the first African woman to win a WTA 1000 title in Madrid.

That boosted her to a new high world ranking, a fact not reflected in her seeding.

She translated her form from Madrid into her first round match with Sorana Cirstea of Romania, breezing through the first set of their match without dropping a set. She was made to work harder in the second set, and needed a tie-break to wrap up the victory, earning her a second round match-up with the Australian number one, Ajla Tomljanovic.

The match began with the pair dropping their serves, and then Jabeur went a break down, Tomljanovic them had a chance to serve for the set, but not only did she spurn it when she dropped her serve, but she was broken again, and lost the first set.

The Australian found herself under increasing pressure in the second set and had already saved five break points before she was broken again. And, just to put the icing on the cake, Jabeur broke her once again as Tomljanovic attempted to serve to stay in the match.

Jabeur v Putintseva Prediction and Tip

Putintseva has shown battling qualities to get this far, but now she is playing one of the form players on the WTA tour. The Tunisian will be eyeing another quarter-final.
