Casper Ruud v Denis Shapovalov Head to Head

They have met just once before, with Ruud beating Shapovalov in the Geneva Open final last year.

Ruud Breezes Past Brooksby

Casper Ruud marched into the quarterfinals in Rome with a straight sets win over the United States’ Jenson Brooksby.

The American, who registered his first two tour-level wins on clay this week, couldn’t get a third win as he was dumped out by a superior clay court player, who has won six of his seven ATP titles on the surface, with the last one coming earlier this year in Buenos Aires.

Dominating the match from the start, Ruud saved all three of the break points that he faced in the contest, while he broke the 21-year-old once in each set to advance with a 6-3, 6-4 victory.

The win improves the World no. 10 to 19-8 this season. He had won his second round match against the Netherland’s Botic van de Zandschulp, fighting back from a set down to send the Dutchman packing.

Apart from winning the title in Argentina, the Norwegian was also a finalist in Miami—his first ATP 1000 final. He is now two wins away from a second Masters final and one away from equalling his best in Rome. He was in the semifinals the last time he was here in 2020.

Shapovalov Rebounds to Upset Nadal

Facing Ruud in the last eight will be Canada’s Denis Shapovalov, who stunned Rafael Nadal with a comeback win on Thursday.

The World no. 16 was outplayed by the 21-time Grand Slam champion in the first set, but he made a strong recovery in the second before dominating the third, despite dropping serve in the very first game, to beat Nadal for the second time in his career.

Shapovalov, who had beaten the former No. 1 in Montreal in 2017, needed two hours and 38 minutes to beat Nadal 1-6, 7-5, 6-2.

This was the second time in the tournament when Shapovalov had been stretched by an opponent. In the first round, the left-hander had needed over three hours to beat Lorenzo Sonego in three. His second round match was a bit easier as he needed just two sets to dispatch Georgia’s Nikoloz Basilashvili.

A semifinalist at the Italian Open in 2020, Shapovalov will be looking to reach that stage once again but runs into another tough opponent in the quarterfinals.

Ruud v Shapovalov Prediction and Tip

While Shapovalov will be high on confidence after knocking out Nadal on clay, he will be wary of the Norwegian’s ability to prosper on the surface. Given his past exploits, Ruud will be a slight favourite in this contest. Expect him to win in three.

Tip: Ruu to win in three sets: 3/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
