Astra Sharma is a solid clay player but the Australian was really tested in the opening round of this even as Marcela Zacarias nearly bested her.
Sharma took quite a while to settle into the match and that might be trouble for her when she faces a young and hungry Marcinko.
Sharma doesn’t have anything special in her play but her serve is crucial to what she does. If it’s not falling then she is quite vulnerable and in round one the serve was bad. Especially in the opening set which she lost 1-6. Sharma is only 3-6 on the year and that’s far from her level last year.
This year was supposed to be a breakout but it’s not. She even dropped don the rankings, so much so that she is missing the Roland Garros qualies and she took part in the last year.

Marcinko, the Newest Talent
Petra Marcinko is a 16-year old bright talent from Croatia who will certainly be at the top of world tennis sooner rather than later. The Croatian played all of her matches this year on clay and she has a 16-3 record on the surface. She has been simply spectacular even against lesser opposition.
Getting into the main draw here was a success even if it’s a wild card. A round one win over Peterson is impressive as well especially since she demonstrated poise in the deciding set against a more experienced player who is very good on clay.

So I think this is a very unique situation for both players. Sharma is not playing well this year and she certainly did not play that well in round one. Marcinko played a lot better and won against a player that can be considered better than both Sharma and Zacarias.
The Croatian has the tools to trouble Sharma. She can return very well and if she keeps being aggressive from it Sharma might risk too much. Overall I think there is a lot more value on Marcinko than on Sharma so I’ll back the Croatian. The bookies agree so there is that.
