Former world number one Garbine Muguruza arrived in Morocco following an uneventful spell in the clay swing. Although she has been fairly successful on red dirt – her maiden Grand Slam title came in Paris, it hasn’t quite been the case for her in 2022.
After her opening-round exit to Alison Riske in the BNP Paribas Open, Muguruza took some time off the tour to recuperate and returned to action in Madrid. The Spaniard made it as far as the second round where she lost to Anhelina Kalinina.
In Rome, with a bye into round two, she played the Kazakh qualifier Yulia Putintseva. She went up 6-3, 5-4 (30-0), serving for the match. Putintseva, however, fought back valiantly, broke the service and eventually won the match.
That was certainly a bitter pill to swallow for Muguruza who has had a rather disappointing season so far. Even though she is World No. 10, she has not won more than two matches in any tournament. Her losses have come at the hands of players like Daria Kasatkina, Alize Cornet, Veronika Kudermetova, and Jelena Ostapenko.
In Rabat, she did put up a commanding performance by dispatching Anna Dalinina in the opener in straight sets.

Trevisan Knocks You Out
World No. 85 Martin Trevisan defeated Xiaodi You 6-0, 6-4 to start her journey in the competition.
Like Muguruza, the Italian has also endured a bleak spell on the tour; her runs are mired with early exits with no semblance of form or rhythm.
Her best run came in the Australian Open where she made it to round two as a qualifier. Trevisan also reached the quarterfinal in the Marbella Challenger but since then, she has lost early in Madrid (qualifying round defeat to Kaia Kanepi) and Rome (first-round loss to Shuai Zhang).
That said, the 28-year-old has seen her fair share of success on clay; she has 17 ITF finals, one WTA doubles final, and one Challenger final on this surface.
Muguruza v Trevisan Prediction and Tip
Both players are sailing in a similar ocean but Muguruza’s boat is far superior to Trevisan’s. As a four-time major finalist and a rather regular part of the top 10, the Spaniard is the clear favourite here and will fancy her chances of reaching the quarters.
However, Trevisan knows that Muguruza is not entirely immune – as evident from her shaky form. Backing her may not be the worst bet to make – the odds on her are quite good after all. But for those who enjoy safe bets, Muguruza is a definite choice.
