Improved Play by Khachanov
Karen Khachanov has had a decent year with a 15-12 score but the Russian left a lot of wins on the table. Khachanov broke out a few years ago but ever since then, he struggled to get to a top level. He’s still ranked fairly high at number 24 and that’s largely to his solid consistent play.
Occasionally he will produce a superb level and win a couple of matches making a deep run. It happened at the Olympics last year for example. This year hasn’t produced that kind of run yet but there are many solid wins along the way.
Clay has been solid at 4-4 with a chance to seize the quarterfinal here. If he can best Molcan he will be pretty close to making a deep run in Lyon and that should give him some confidence heading into Roland Garros next week.
Better Days For Molcan
Alex Molcan made a name for himself last year with some spectacular performances that allowed him to break into the top 100. The Slovakian player plays his best tennis on clay and his 43-14 record on the surface last year showcases that. This year it’s been somewhat of a struggle as he only has an 8-5 record with a couple of bad losses.
Recent form has been weak for Molcan who is looking for another deep run like the one he had in Marrakech. He has Marian Vajda, ex-coach of Djokovic now and generally, his days are looking brighter now. A couple of bad losses lately should be forgotten.
Molcan plays aggressive tennis and that suits him well. He tends to miss a lot from time to time so consistency is something he needs to work on. Still, he’s young and there is plenty of time for him. He just needs to keep working.
Khachanov v Molcan Prediction and Tip
So in an ideal scenario, Alex Molcan would win that match. He’s the better clay player overall but this level recently has not been good. As much as Khachanov can be shaky the Russia is very solid overall and rarely loses matches he should not lose.
He’s been pretty good in Rome and he played with a lot of confidence against Simon in round one so I expect him to bring the same thing to this match. Couple with the shaky form of Molcan I think the Russian will win this one. A lot will depend on his serve but if he keeps his cool he should be good.
The best thing for him is that Molcan is far more aggressive so he will certainly take more risks. If Khachanov keeps his cool and serves well he will cruise. I back him to do that.
Tip: Khachanov to win in straight sets: 10/11 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
