Arantxa Rus is having a fairly decent year at 15-14 but on clay, she has been a superb 10-4. She has always been a superb clay player with a 32-10 record on the surface last year as well. She has extremely powerful groundstrokes and clay allows her to prepare better for the shots.
She likes to attack the serve often and clay gives her a perfect chance to do that. She also has a powerful serve but she doesn’t hit it at a very consistent level. Simply her tactic is to overpower her opponents and this year she has been doing just that.
Rus played a lot of ITF events recently and she’s been pretty good there. On the WTA tour, things look a bit differently but that built up confidence might do her good. That has been the case this week in Morocco as she did not lose a single set so far.

Stunner over Muguruza for Trevisan
Garbine Muguruza has been struggling a lot lately but even so, beating her is very very hard. Martina Trevisan was able to do that simply by being annoying. The Italian never gave up even she was 2-6 1-3 down and she battled back from that deficit. The final set was a thrashing as Muguruza simply checked out of the match.
Trevisan has an interesting style. Her shorter stature forces her to run a lot during points hence why she prefers to be the attacking one. That can’t be always the case and it wasn’t against Muguruza but she defend herself well while launching a couple of counter-attacks.
She can employ a similar style against Rus as well because the Dutch player plays similarly and doesn’t like to do the same things Muguruza doesn’t. If she can keep a high level and avoid disasters on her serving games she will have a chance.
Rus v Trevisan Prediction and Tip
These two players are very close in level. They both played this week but their styles clash quite a bit. Rus has generally dominated their matchup on clay with Trevisan winning on faster courts. It’s only natural because Rus doesn’t like to be attacked and there lies the chance for Trevisan.
The problem for the Italian is her serve which can be attacked. If she can force more errors than winners from her opponent she should be in good shape. I expect a close match and quite possibly three sets but I do think on clay Rus should have a slight advantage.
