Tallon Griekspoor v Reilly Opelka Head to Head

Opelka leads their H2H 1-0 winning the 1st round of the French Open qualifying draw back in 2018. The match was on clay. Since then, both players have developed their game ten fold and this should be far more competitive.

Griekspoor on Brink of First ATP Semifinal

Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor put up an emphatic victory over home qualifier Johan Nikles to reach his second quarterfinal of this year. He won 6-3, 7-5 despite being set points down in the second set at 3-5.

The world number 64 is now 9-9 this year and 4-3 on clay.  His four wins have come in the past five matches, winning the first two rounds in Geneva and two qualifiers in Rome.

Griekspoor’s baseline game is very strong and can handle most top players in the longest of rallies. His return of serve is also exceptional and is equally good at the net. His serve is his weak point which Opelka can target.

If Griekspoor can pull off an upset here, he will be making his first semifinal appearance at the ATP tour level. The Dutchman had won 8 challengers last year of which 6 were on clay. He has already beat another American, Tommy Paul in his first round match.

Opelka Makes a Fast Start in Geneva

After facing three consecutive first round exits on the European clay before arriving in Geneva, Opelka brushed past Christopher O’Connell 6-3, 7-5 facing one break point only.

Opelka had a very average first serve percentage of 56% against the Australian. However, some of his kick serves were absolutely incredible and won the crowd over.

The American has already won a ATP title on clay, winning in Houston last month before heading over to Europe. He is 5-3 on clay and has a 18-9 record this year. He has played 4 semifinals this year and will be eyeing a 5th semifinal.

Opelka’s game style doesn’t necessarily suit the clay, but has shown great adaptation. He played with a very aggressive approach in the first and was all over O’Connell’s serve from game 1. He will be deploying the same tactic against Griekspoor.

Griekspoor v Opelka Prediction and Tip

Tallon Griekspoor has shown great capability on clay over the past 18 months, and is one of the better returners on this surface. He has the ability to stand at the end of the court and pick a return from deep.

If Opelka doesn’t improve his first serve percentage, the American will be in trouble. Opelka’s record shows he is erratic on clay and if the Dutchman gets his service games going, there is an upset on the cards.
