Denis Shapovalov v Holger Rune Head to Head

Shapovalov and Rune will be facing off each other for the first time.

Shapovalov Has Work Cut Out

Shapovalov isn’t too fond of clay courts, but his record isn’t the worst in the business. In fact, looking at it purely from the point of his career stats, Shapovalov has done as well on clay as he has on hard court surfaces.

The issue isn’t so much about the record though but the fact that Shapovalov hasn’t played a lot on clay – just 50 of them. As compared to that, he has a 111-85 win-loss record on hard court surfaces.

And he enters this opening round at French Open with a 4-3 win-loss on clay for this season.

While a quarterfinal appearance in Rome before he fell to Casper Ruud might not have been that underwhelming, Shapovalov lost to Ilya Ivashka in the first round in Geneva in three sets immediately after that.

And for a player who has never made it beyond the second round here at Roland-Garros, a 40th-ranked opponent, clay court lover might not have been what he expected.

Rune Improving with Every Tournament

It was only earlier this month Rune finally won his first ever ATP title. It came on the clay courts of the Munich Open where he got past Alexander Zverev en route lifting his maiden trophy.

And while an exhausted Rune fell in the first round in Rome, he has followed that performance up with a solid showing in Lyon.

Wins over Arthur Rinderknech, Adrian Mannarino and Manuel Guinard have taken him to the semifinals at the time of writing, and while Rune will be mindful of not tiring himself out too much before the start of the French Open, he will look to take this opportunity to go the distance.

Rune’s performances this season have already seen him rise to 40th in the world coming into the Lyon Open and even if he loses in the semifinal at Lyon, the Danish player would have hit a career-best ranking of 39th.

Can he use his form to get past Shapovalov here?

Shapovalov v Rune Prediction and Tip

Shapovalov might start off as a favourite here on paper, 4/6 at the moment but Rune at 13/10 seems to be a sound call to win this one given his form and record on clay.
