Keys in Big Strife
Keys has made it as far as the quarterfinals at this tournament on two separate occasion and pushed on to the semifinal in one of them. So, it’s not as if playing on clay is much of an issue for the American.
It’s surprising then that Keys enters this tournament on the back of three successive defeats, all of which have come on clay.
Since winning her first round match at Charleston, against Ulrikke Eikeri, who has never been ranked in the top 200, Keys has lost to Belinda Bencic, Maria Sakkari and Anhelina Kalinina.
And while one might argue those defeats came against tougher, higher pedigreed opponents at the moment, it only means Keys comes into this opener without much confidence under her belt.
She will hope to get going against an opponent though who has never won a main draw match at Roland-Garros.

Kalinskaya Also 1-3 on Clay This Year
Clay is not Kalinskaya’s surface, of that there is no doubt. The world number 82 enters the French Open this year having never won a round here and it only gets tougher for her with the kind of form she has shown on clay this season.
Featuring in two WTA 125 tournaments and one WTA 250, Kalinskaya has won just one match while losing three of them. And even that win came against a player who has never been ranked in the top 300 on the WTA charts.
What Kalinskaya would like is to show the kind of spark that was on offer during the initial part of the season. At both, the Indian Wells and Miami Open, Kalinskaya had made it to round three, coming in as a qualifier.
With clay been such an Achilles Heel though, it’s difficult to imagine her putting it across Keys in this opener.
Keys v Kalinskaya Prediction and Tip
Keys might not have form on her side but she has someone up against her who has never had form on clay. Expect Keys to come through with a win here.
