Anett Kontaveit v Ajla Tomljanovic Head to Head

Kontaveit holds a 2-0 advantage although, both those matches went to three sets. Their last meeting took place in the 2019 US Open round of 64.

Kontaveit Coming off a Shaky Run

World No. 5 Anett Kontaveit started the season on a scintillating note but her form has since faded. She won the St. Petersburg Trophy and reached the final at the Qatar Open, defeating the likes of Belinda Bencic, Maria Sakkari, Ons Jabeur, and Jelena Ostapenko.

However, in the subsequent events of the Sunshine Doubles, the Estonian fell in the opening matches. In Miami, she was stunned by Ann Li while in Indian Wells, she lost to Marketa Vondrousova.

It was a similar story for her in Stuttgart too as she made it as far as the quarterfinal before bowing out to Aryna Sabalenka. In Rome, Kontaveit was dismissed by Petra Martic in the opening match in straight sets.

The 26-year-old is heading into the Slam with a serious lack of form; she hasn’t fared that well in Paris historically either so that’s something else for her to keep in mind.

Tomljanovic, Confident of her Chances

Ajla Tomljanovic managed to push Kontaveit to three sets in their last two meetings, losing only by a close margin. This time, the odds are a bit more in her favour as her opponent is struggling and in the process has set a precedent to follow.

The 29-year-old most recently reached the quarterfinal in Rabat where she withdrew from her match against Anna Bondar after trailing 1-5, citing illness. It was Tomljanovic’s second such round of the season; her last elite-eight stint came in Istanbul where she fell to Yulia Putintseva.

Apart from that, the Australian has been defeated in the early rounds this season. That said, Ajla is in the top 50 (current World No. 44), is well-experienced, and can put up a good fight.

Kontaveit v Tomljanovic Prediction and Tip

Kontaveit will start as the favourite on paper but given her rocky form, Tomljanovic can cause the upset. Backing her wouldn’t be the worst bet to make – especially at the odds at which she is available – but for those looking for safer bets, this can turn out to be a long affair.
